A 3.0 Percent Military Pay Raise for 2021?
As both Houses of Congress attempt to reconcile the National Defense Authorization Act for 2020 that includes a 3.1 percent military pay raise for 2020, the first pay indicator for 2021 has been released.
Today, October 31, 2019, at 0830 EST, the United States Employment Cost Index (ECI) was released by the United States Bureau of Labor. What makes this morning's release important to the United States military is this one is the main economic indicator is used to determine the baseline pay raise amount for 2021's basic pay raise.
Per United States Code Title 37, the specific ECI stat used is "wages and salaries, for private industry workers for the period ending September 2019"; this morning's number is 3.0. So, unless the President decides to propose a different figure in February or March when he delivers his budget proposal, or if Congress decides to write as part of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2021 a different amount, then the statutorily diven pay raise for 2021 will be 3.0 percent.
So, in doing the math, add the 3.0 percent figure to the 2020 military pay chart, then you get what the 2021 military pay chart would look like. This ain't rocket science.
The attached 2021 chart will be immediately updated if/when the raise percentage changes via either Presidential proposal or Congressional action.
And, now we wait for President Trump's budget release expected sometime in February or March 2020.
