A 3.1 Percent Military Pay Raise for 2020?
Today, October 31, 2018, at 0830EST, the United States Employment Cost Index (ECI) was released. The releasing of the ECI by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics is an eagerly awaited quarterly economic indicator for those in the stock market and politics. What makes this morning's release important to the United States military is this one is the main economic indicator is used to determine any pay raise amount for 2020's raise.
The indicator from ECI that is utilized for the 2020 raise is the "wages and salaries, for private industry workers for the period ending September 2018"; this morning's number is 3.1. So, unless the President decides to propose a different figure in February 2019 when he delivers his budget proposal, or if Congress decides to write as part of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2020 a different amount, then the statutorily diven pay raise for 2020 will be 3.1 percent.
So, in doing the math, add the 3.1 percent figure to the 2019 military pay chart, then you get what the 2020 military pay chart should look like. This ain't rocket science. The 2020 charts will be immediately updated if/when the raise percentage changes via either Presidential proposal or Congressional action.
And, now we wait for President Trump's budget release expected in early February 2019.
